Critique and Change in Art and Performance. A Workshop on disciplinary boundaries and methodologies.
We will discuss "The Transindividual Act of Self-Burning" by Bojana Cvejić and "Infrastructure as diagrammatic disposition: Fareed Armaly's From/To (1999/2002) Revisited" by Sabeth Buchmann.
In the introduction to her book Choreographing Problems. Expressive Concepts in European Contemporary Dance and Performance Bojana Cvejić describes the genealogies of the terms and concepts/categories of genre of dance, choreography and performance due to their historical location and thus traces the different developments within contemporary European dance since the 1990s.
Sabeth Buchmann researches the rehearsal as a format which is used across the disciplines, while it has been scarcely considered in art discourses. Putting Rehearsals to the Test investigates the function of the rehearsal as a methodology and reflection on processes of artistic production. Practices of rehearsal, in attempting to transform asymmetric labor divisions, appear as links between aesthetic judgment and social or institutional critique.
With those two considerations in mind, we want to discuss the following questions: How can we re-evaluate the self-image of our respective disciplines and rethink their subject-specific methods? How do those methods contribute to shape the processes of canonization and institutionalization? What about their normative character respectively the possibilities of criticizing and transforming them? How do the particular epistemologies infect our research and our writing? Who writes about the arts and in which institutional contexts? And what escapes the subject-specific view of the arts?
