Moving away from the white cube. On museums’ norms and attempts to break them (Fiona McGovern)
In recent years it once again has become very obvious that the assumed “neutrality” of museums and the white cube as its iconic exhibition space is a construct, and ideologically loaded. This talk will take the pseudo-neutrality of the white cube as a starting point to ask how body and mind are addressed in exhibitions (or not), how museums today critically reflect their underlying norms, and – often with the help of artists – attempt to challenge them.
